Shade Trellis
Shade Trellis
A shade trellis designed for an avid gardener. Due to health problems, the homeowner couldn’t stay in the sun for extended periods of time. The shade trellis does not block the sun, but filters the sunlight along the front of the home. As this structure was constructed in the front setback of the home, we had to complete an extensive Building Department and neighborhood review – after a long process, we finally were approved to move ahead with construction, just before summer.
The new trellis, not only providing a break from the sun, but enhancing the home’s appearance.
Before the trellis, the home’s south west facing facade made the front of the home unbearable during as the day progressed.
For this project we created a 3D drawing to help show the completed trellis structure.
This perspective of the rendering shows the front of the home with the modeled trellis.
Front elevation of the home, almost completed.

3D model study of the front elevation.
The completed trellis, well almost…one coat of stain to the beam ends to protect them from the elements.
The structure was stained prior to installation – a one coat process with our favorite dark exterior stain. Structures like this appear to be relatively easy, but they do require an enormous amount of upfront work during the design phase to work out all the details.
