Children’s View Window
Just visited a Kitchen remodel that started last week and found a kid’s height view window custom installed in the construction wall by Ed Lee, the project manager. The children obviously appreciated the gesture!

After. Before looking from the former dining room. The former Kitchen was separated from the Dining space, by removing the wall we combined the two areas. Dining spaces over the years have become less 'formalized', and by opening the area up, the space actually gets used.

After. During draft. The hallway was split up into three new spaces, removing the long hallway formally dividing the house.

After. Before. We removed the upper portion of the stairwell wall to open up the Kitchen space, and to allow natural light to trickle down into the basement through the two new skylights.

Before - All hallway! The sketch on the right shows the new layout. The hall is now entered through one location, going left takes you to the Master Suite, going right to the kid's bedrooms.

A Dramatic Kitchen Remodel
A dramatic before and after kitchen remodel, with minimal disruption to the floor plan and exterior. The former lower plan was divided into separate rooms based on the activity: a Living Room off of the entry, a Dining Room between the Kitchen and Living Room, the Kitchen, and a stepped down Family Room with direct access to the Garage. The Dining Room was rarely used, in fact it had been temporarily converted into the child’s playroom, and the dining function was located into the rarely used front Living Room. We decided to utilize the former Dining Room as part of the new Kitchen remodel by reducing it’s size and converting a portion of the space into a large walk-in Pantry. A little confusing…hopefully the pictures will best explain the story:

Cooktop detail. The clients drove the interior design on this project, with some professional help, but it was the clients' vision brought to life - for example, note the mix of cabinetry and counter top material. Beautiful.

We gained space by removing a room (unused Dining Room) at the far end of the Kitchen. That space was replaced with a large walk in pantry. We shifted the Kitchen over providing adequate seating at the table, and at the new raised bar. The former dining area was cramped and traffic flow to the exterior was obstructed.

Goodbye Blue, hello new Kitchen Remodel
A very clean Kitchen remodel – a drastic change from the former blue galley Kitchen.
Notice the location of the two windows on the right and the hanging chandelier as the location did not change. Painted cabinets with butcher block island and Cambria counter tops (sussex). Scroll down for several before, during and after pictures, including a 3D rendering completed during the design phase.
Goodbye blue cabinets…note the ceiling voids showing the former wall location. We constructed a temporary wall (left) with a secure door to separate the living area from the construction area. The large pipe is our filtration system to help keep the air clear of dust.

After - The completed remodel. Before - The main Living space was separated into several areas. Our goal was to remove the two posts, and the two walls surrounding the Kitchen - no small feat as these posts and walls are supporting the second level. During - Demolition! The windows along the right have downtown views.

Kitchen Remodel for 60′s Home
This home has the bones of a great house. Architect designed and built in the 60′s, the home has a great floor plan, well constructed, and takes full advantage of it’s site. The Kitchen however had seen it’s time. Although the former Kitchen was quite advanced and atypical for the era – a Kitchen remodel was inevitable.

After - note the doorway upper left as a frame of reference for the before picture below. We relocated the air return located upper left, to open up the wall for art. One of the primary challenges of this Kitchen was the connection to the existing home from the public area. The hall you see above actually leads to the bedroom wing, and the garage - the main guest entrance was cut diagonally through the dining room, the door to the dining room is located in the upper right of the image. During - Entrance from the Hall leads to the Garage. This acted as our construction entrance, we installed a temporary door to provide privacy. The former Dining Room entrance has been filled in, the door header (beam) is still visible (mid upper left of image).

Kitchen Remodel in West Boise
Using the same area, we completely updated this West Boise Kitchen. The sink was the only station that remained in the same space (typical), and new cabinets were installed to take advantage of the full ceiling height once the soffits were removed. The clients wished for soapstone look, but real soapstone is very brittle and soft; so, instead, we honed a black granite to take the polished finish off – turned out great.

Beautiful Eagle Foothills Contemporary Kitchen Remodel
A contemporary update on a Kitchen achieved with minor modifications to the former kitchen. Rather than removing the cabinetry, we simply updated with a dark stain finish and new hardware. Utilizing such a dark stain allows flexibility with adding new cabinets as tying in the old with the new is much easier. This Kitchen remodel was part of a large addition and main level upgrade.
Click photos to enlarge:

After - the former cabinets modified with new fronts, and some additional cabinetry at the island. Before - prior to the kitchen remodel, the kitchen counter tops were laminate and the cabinets had their natural finish.

After - a big skylight in a Kitchen, additional cabinets at the island, new pantry door, tile floor, and a bar area (top left). Before - the wall in the foreground was completely removed, opening up the former cramped Dining space. During - drywall stage with the dividing wall now removed.

After - looking towards the kitchen from the Family Room, the fireplace was also updated with finishes to tie into the kitchen. Before - looking past the fireplace into the former Kitchen.
This project is another great example of a cost-effective upgrade to the kitchen, utilizing the existing cabinets (they were a good quality cabinet). The combination of staining, slight modifications, new hardware, and adding the dramatic skylight shaft, turned a modest kitchen into a beatiful kitchen that will serve the clients well for years to come.

Stunning Highlands Kitchen Remodel
This Kitchen remodel, featured in the Idaho Statesman, doubled the size of the former Kitchen. The former Kitchen allowed little standing room for gatherings, had low ceilings, and was closed off from the home. The Kitchen remodel included a small addition to the front of the home, creating a wide open space inside for a large central island with seating for four. This Kitchen features a main sink and a prep sink, two dishwashers, a huge single level island, and a separate fridge/freezer side-by-side setup. Cabinets by Jaymark cabinets, interior design by Seed Interiors, Thermadore appliance package provided by Jim’s Appliances in Boise.
Click photos to enlarge:

After - custom fabricated Ceasar stone island. Before - the former Kitchen's nook did not get used, and with the Dining Room directly adjacent (in foreground), there was no need to have two tables side by side. During - brand new Jaymark cabinets waiting for appliances and countertops.

Kitchen Remodel for Lakewood (SE Boise) home
The goal for this expansive project was to update, enlarge, upgrade, improve flow, and to reflect the tastes and sensibilities of the homeowners. This kitchen remodel was a part of that vision, and shows the blend of old world look with modern conveniences.
Click photos to enlarge:

After - the completed kitchen, with distressed cabinets, walnut flooring, with the new mud room beyond, and pantry (not visible) to the left beyond the fridge. Before - Owners did not like the dropped ceiling, and the original cabinets were of poor quality. During - note door used to lead to the exterior. A mud room was added through this opening. The former Laundry Room was located around the corner, to the left of the white door. We moved the Laundry Room upstairs near the Bedrooms, and converted the area to a large walk in pantry/baking area - see photos below.

Kitchen Remodel/Upgrade for Boise Bench Home
A kitchen remodel/upgrade rather than a completely new kitchen. We were able to use the existing cabinetry for most of the cabinets, replacing the drawer and door fronts for a new look. Some of the cabinets were modified (such as the fridge cabinet bank), and we added a new cabinet over the iMac mounted on the wall.
Click photos to enlarge:

After. Before - Looking towards the kitchen before the remodel, we removed the upper peninsula cabinet and removed the drop down ceiling. Note the post dropping from the upper cabinet, we knew prior to construction that the ceiling above contained a beam and it was load bearing. During - the dropped ceiling and beam removed, new can lights installed, bar wall constructed and cabinets all ready for their new fronts. Note that we retained the bank of drawers located at the lower right, we painted the cabinet to match the wall color.

Kitchen Remodel 3
Foothills East Kitchen Remodel
An upgraded kitchen resulting in a dramatic before and after. The former kitchen was separated by two walls from the living/dining areas, our goal was to remove the walls without using posts – which we were able to do. The kitchen cabinet layout remained, but we added two raised bars at the former wall locations, and added new pendant lighting.
Click photos to enlarge:

After - the former cabinets and counter tops all remained in place, as well as the appliance locations. The former cabinets were resurfaced, refinished, and new hardware was installed. Before, only partially open to the living/dining area.

After - looking into the kitchen. We designed a raised bar around the former wall footprint as to not affect the existing hardwood flooring. Before - the former layout made it very difficult to entertain. Note door to the right is also oak, which we refinished to harmonize to the new cabinet finish.
This is another great example of the “face-lift” Kitchen remodel that maximizes the use of existing materials, makes modest structural changes, and with the clients’ excellent finishes choices, creates an entirely new-feeling space while staying within the desired budget.

Riverside Village Kitchen Remodel – small modifications for a big change
Part of a larger project (Master Suite addition), the owner grew tired of her Kitchen and wished for some simple upgrades. Besides the location of the island, the layout was fine, which allowed us to simply update the cabinets rather than replace them. With a ‘relocate’ of the island (see below), we opened up the floor space in the Kitchen. Along with removing the drop ceiling florescent lights.

After the kitchen remodel. The dropped ceiling is gone (goodbye florescent lights!), can lights added, new counter tops with raised bar and pendant lights, and the island - saved, and slightly modified to be used as the new bar cabinet. The Kitchen was too small for an island, but the island was a demand item back in the 80's, so here it is - a hip bumper for the owner for years, always in the way. We were actually able to save the island cabinets, and reinstall as part of the bar.

Another after shot, showing the counter top and back splash. The window was replaced with the sill raised considerably as the owner wanted a splash behind her sink. The former window was a 'garden' window.
The combination of removing the island (and utilizing to create the penisula/raised bar) and raising of the ceiling with new recessed lighting gives the kitchen the look and feel of being much larger and yet is in the same footprint. A dramatic difference with minimal investment = a great value.

River Run Kitchen Upgrade
A great way to save money is to simply update finishes in the Kitchen. In this case we removed the florescent lights, replaced the counter tops, and refinished the cabinets.
Click photos to enlarge:
If your Kitchen ‘functions’ ok, than replacing cabinets is often not necessary. As this economical but dramatic change shows, a space can be transformed and feel new again without breaking the bank. Refinished cabinets, new lighting, new tops, a new window and refinished flooring can have wonderful results, as the clients’ selections in these photos attest to.
